Planting trees in high need areas and transforming abandoned spaces into community gardens.
Temescal Street Garden
2015 to Present
The organization and community raised funds and built a 1,000 square foot shared garden on Caltrans land adjacent to Highway 24 and a residential street in Oakland. The project has helped deter illegal dumping and has made a place to grow fruit, vegetables, flowers and other plants. Ten years since its creation, the garden is going strong, and neighbors have added beehives that produce honey several times a year. Expanding beehives, water, insurance, maintenance, and management are on-going costs as our initial funding is near end.
Tree Planting
In partnership with other community groups, we have planted scores of street trees in Oakland to help address an urgent need for tree canopy after the City’s tree planting program ended in 2008. More trees are dying than being replaced. Time is of the essence.
In 2025 we will expand tree planting citywide. Working in collaboration with Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation, trees will be planted in the highest need areas according to State and city maps, including East and West Oakland. Trees, posts, wire mesh, and concrete cutting are expected outlays.
54th Street Pollinator Garden
Through an agreement with Caltrans we will adopt a second neglected public area adjacent to a city street create a pollinator garden and community gathering space. Costs include reconstituting soil and resurfacing, purchasing plants and groundcover, landscape features and hose-bib drip irrigation.
